This application is for current TU students, including incoming freshmen and transfer students beginning classes in Fall 2024.
This application form is for TURC Team Projects.
Applicants to TURC Team projects are required first to secure a faculty sponsorship to work on a project.
Will you be earning TURC course credit for research?
Please note below how many credits of TURC research you plan to enroll in for a summer and/or semesters of the next year. The same schedule and rules for adding or withdrawing from courses apply to TURC courses, so you may change things later, but you should outline your plan.
(Explanation: Hours of research activity in TURC should either be funded by a stipend or be pursued to earn course credit. Students on stipend may add hours of credit-earning research to hours of stipend-funded research. For example, students on summer stipend may pursue 200 hours for stipend + 200 hours for 3 course credits, which would amount to 40 hours per week for 10 weeks.
Tuition will not be charged for summer TURC courses. Enrollment in TURC courses during the academic year will be part of the tuition charged to full-time students. Students enrolled in credit-bearing TURC courses will be graded by their Mentors, those grades will appear on transcripts, and they will be included in the student’s gpa.
Students, it is crucial that you make sure your Faculty Mentor approves before you enroll in course credits, as they will be taking on the responsibility of being your course instructor and grading you. Make sure you have their agreement before indicating your plans to enroll in TURC course credits.
Following the rule that 1 credit should equal 845 instructional minutes, and the principle that 3-4 hours of study should accompany every hour of instruction, every credit of a TURC course should equate to approximately 65 hours of research. Students wanting to pursue full-time research over the summer for course credit should enroll in 6 credits, which would amount to just under 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. Students wanting to pursue part-time research as a supplement to full-time enrollment for a semester should enroll in 1 course credit, which would amount to about 4 hours of research a week during a semester.)
TURC Scholars are expected to commit service hours equal to, but in addition to, their committed research hours.
This means 20 hours of community service for TURC Scholars on a summer stipend, 16 hours for TURC Scholars on an academic year stipend, and 6 hours of community service for every course credit earned. Students may double-count service commitments to the honors college or other University of Tulsa programs. Students may not be paid or otherwise compensated for hours they count as community service.
Except for the Faculty-led service projects, all community service should be to a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization or to an opportunity listed on the EngageTU directory. https://utulsa.givepulse.com/group/297303-University-of-Tulsa. Service to offices, departments, and laboratories within the University of Tulsa do not count as community service. The service should be outward-facing, to the community outside the university.
Hours will be logged on the EngageTU web site.
Describe your plan in 200 or fewer words. This plan may change later, but you should have a fully formed plan at this point.
